Have an idea for The Emancipator? We want to hear it.

The Emancipator reframes conversations on racial inequity and accountability through evidence-based commentary, first-person essays, untold histories, and narrative features. We believe that media counternarratives produce better outcomes for people living at the intersection of identity, class, geography, and beyond.

We are looking to cover topics such as reparations, immigration, disability justice, health equity, wealth gaps, housing, technology, and the criminal-legal system.

But more than topics, we’re looking for ideas that change minds, unforgettable characters, unique experiences, and engaging storytelling.

Here’s how to get started.

Essays and opinion
This can include cultural criticism, reviews, political analysis, and explainers. 500-1500 words.

History, first-person experiences, and oral histories
These are researched and reported stories about the past and the present, as well as personal and group narratives that point the way forward for racial justice. 1500-2500 words.

Narrative reported features
Well-sourced reporting that follows a narrative through time and place, and has great characters. For example, following a group as they get out the vote, doing a deep dive on a months-long fight for housing justice, or a profile of an extraordinary person who needs their story told. 2000-3500 words.

Fees begin at $400 for essays, histories, and first-person experiences, and $1000 for reported features.
