Help us spread the word – republish our stories for free.

Just like the original abolitionists, we view emancipation as a collaborative project.

As a nonprofit newsroom exploring solutions to racial inequity, we welcome the opportunity to share our stories with the widest possible audience and appreciate your support toward that end. Most of our stories should have a “republish” widget at the end of the story to simplify the process.

Unless otherwise stated, all original content published by The Emancipator is governed by the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 4.0 license. We invite you to embed and republish our original written content and original photos for free, in accordance with the terms of the license and the guidelines below. 

Credit us

  • You must credit The Emancipator and the contributor(s) must be bylined. We prefer the following format: “Author Name, The Emancipator.” 
  • You must include the following line at the top of the story linking back to our homepage: “This article was originally published by The Emancipator.” 
  • Ensure that all content hyperlinked in the written piece transfers from the source page.
  • If you share our stories on social media, please tag us in your posts

Images & Video 

  • Only original Emancipator photos may be republished with proper credits and they must be included in the stories in which they originally appeared, without any changes.  
  • You are prohibited from republishing any photos that are not original Emancipator photos, such as those that credit Getty Images, Associated Press, or any supplier other than The Emancipator as its source without first obtaining licensing rights from those suppliers. 
  • Videos may not be republished but may be embedded.  

In republishing our work, you agree to the following: 

  • You will not receive any form of compensation from The Emancipator for any republication of our content. 
  • You are prohibited from any sale or syndication of The Emancipator’s content, and you are also prohibited from granting to any third parties any rights or licenses to The Emancipator content.
  • You may publish our stories on pages with ads, but you may not sell advertisements specifically against our stories.
  • If we request that you remove our content from your website, which we may do for any reason, you must comply immediately.

Help us track our impact 

  • Please include the HTML pixel — located at the bottom of the republishing code — to help us measure the reach of our stories. This tracker tells us the domain and date where the story was published, and view counts. We don’t gather any other information.
  • We love hearing from our partners. Please share any information with us after the story appears, whenever possible. Tracking the impact of our reporting not only helps us with our grant reports, but is critical to better serving our audience.
