The Emancipator has been named a finalist in the 2024 Education Writers Association (EWA) National Awards for Education Reporting, honoring excellence in education journalism. The newsroom was recognized in the News (Small Newsroom) category for its in-depth, multimedia project, “The Supreme Court Ended Affirmative Action for Higher Education. The Impact Could Be Felt for Years to Come,” produced in collaboration with Northeastern University’s Media Innovation Studio.
The reporting package, which examined the implications of the Supreme Court’s landmark decision to end race-conscious college admissions, stood out for its comprehensive storytelling, dynamic data visualization, and nuanced interviews. “This story is a great foreshadowing about the headlines that are currently in national media,” wrote one judge. “These stories offer a diverse range of perspectives and highlight ongoing issues of race and diversity in college settings, offering historical context, student perspectives, and institutional responses.”
Another judge noted: “I loved and appreciated the focus on student voices. The interviews with admissions officials weren’t just canned automated responses either. They elicited a deeper conversation than I’m used to reading about.”
The project explored the long-term implications of the court’s decision through the lived experiences of students and alumni, as well as insights from admissions leaders, education experts, and historical data. Winners will be announced at EWA’s 2025 National Seminar in Las Vegas later this spring.
“This recognition from the Education Writers Association is a testament to the power of collaborative journalism,” said Amber Payne, publisher and general manager of The Emancipator. “We’re proud to elevate student voices and explore the real-world impact of policy shifts like the end of affirmative action. It’s an honor to be named a finalist alongside so many inspiring storytellers, and we’re grateful to Northeastern University’s Media Innovation Studio for their partnership on this project.”
