Before becoming a Pulitzer Prize-nominated cartoonist, Zoe Si was a lawyer. As a small, Asian Canadian woman, she wasn’t always made to feel she belonged in a field dominated by White men. People would look at her, and immediately put her in a box made of Asian stereotypes.
In her new original comic for The Emancipator, Si looks back at dealing with the stress of law school as a 20-year-old. She found her voice and empowerment through comedy that, at first, leaned into misogynistic tropes and, later, grew more sophisticated. Si’s comedic path is an example of how humor is a personal expression that evolves as someone grows.
Comedy, like law, is a genre dominated by White men. Finding empowerment is often a winding journey toward eliciting laughter on your own terms.
